AI and art production

Today I saw a Youtube video of an artist explaining how she used AI for inspiration to make paintings. I wondered how it works with copyrights and using AI in your work. The same rules apply when you take an AI image and make it your work in Photoshop or other software. The AI is then no longer considered AI but human production.

When you generate an image using AI and then use it as an example for a painting, the resulting painting is not inherently considered AI. Let me explain:

  1. Image Generation with AI:

    • When you create an image using artificial intelligence (AI), you’re leveraging algorithms and computational processes to generate visual content. This could involve techniques like neural networks, deep learning, or generative models.
    • The AI system analyzes patterns, learns from existing data, and produces an image based on its training.
    • The generated image is a product of the AI’s capabilities and the input it received.
  2. Using the AI-Generated Image as an Example for a Painting:

    • If you take the AI-generated image and use it as a reference or inspiration for a traditional painting (e.g., using brushes, canvas, and physical materials), the resulting painting is a human creation.
    • The act of translating the digital image into a painting involves your artistic interpretation, creativity, and manual skills.
    • The painting reflects your choices in terms of color, composition, brushstrokes, and other artistic elements.
  3. Distinguishing Between AI and Human Creativity:

    • The key distinction lies in the origin of creativity:
      • The AI-generated image is a result of computational processes and learned patterns.
      • The painting is a manifestation of your artistic vision and expression.
    • While the AI played a role in inspiring the painting, the final artwork is a unique blend of your creativity and the AI-generated content.

In summary, the painting itself is not considered AI; it’s a human creation influenced by AI. The process of creating art often involves a dynamic interplay between technology and human imagination.
